Project Arizona, The Rise of the Phönix...A Wide Body Story
Terve,
Henkka tallta Lossista. Mina kirjoitan Englanniksi kun mina olen huono kirjoittamaan Suomeksi. Kiitos.
Born and raised here in the US but full Finnish blood. Lived in Lahti for nearly two years recently but now back in the US. I wanted to share a project that I have started since my return to the States with my fellow Finnish MB enthusiast.
It's quite involved but is coming down the home stretch with the invasive body transformation.
The project in brief started with a 1985 US spec 500SEC California coupe. The donor vehicle was a 1983 Euro spec 500SEC AMG Wide Body saved from a junk yard in Arizona. All of the AMG bits from the WB will be transferred over to the '85. Meanwhile I have taken the 12 piece wide body kit and reproduced three copies. Also, the AMG had the very rare 5.4 liter SOHC motor which all of the bits have been documented, all machine work nearly complete and soon ready for assembly.
Attached are few photos.
Here is a link to the long story in it's entirety.

Morro,
The entire project has been a wonderfully enlightening experience full of discovery. Much of "mystic" has been lifted and some of pieces to the pre-merger AMG puzzle have been identified. This will enable us, as early AMG enthusiasts, to pick up where AMG left off and/or recreate some of the unique engineering of yesteryear. AMG today has long since abandoned their early work and has admittedly distanced themselves from those years entirely.
So it's up to us follow our passion and continue with these iconic vehicles we hold so close.
I hope to have the coupe back from paint by the end of the month. Once the WB conversion was completed the shop stepped away to tend to other projects but I am expecting them to resume shortly.
Though the current US spec power plant leaves one yearning for more kick, it does still perform wonderfully even with the 185,000 miles and that will allow me to continue the 5.4 build at my own pace.
Cheers!

W126 M117 AMG Headers
One of the missing pieces from the AMG 500SEC Wide Body Phönix engine build were the AMG headers. These were removed from the donor and sold prior to securing the vehicle.
Fortunately a fellow pre-merger AMG owner and enthusiast had a set and was kind enough to lend out for the purpose of reproduction.
A premier header manufacture was able to create and produce an exact replica.
One step closer to pre-merger AMG goodness! PM or email if you are interested!

"Dieselit pitävät terävää ihmiskorvalle sopimatonta kolinaa, jota ei pystytä vaimentamaan millään. Sen sijaan bensiinimoottorin peltipakosarjan mukavaa ja pehmeämpää porinaa on ilo kuunnella. Tämä on ehkäpä merkittävin ero bensiinin ja dieselin välillä, jonka takia dieselit kannattaa jättää rahtilaivojen ja työkoneiden voimanlähteeksi."

The only thing missing from this project are the original wheels. Though I have alternatives, it would be rather special to have the exact wheels as delivered on the wide body back in 1983. A few sets have popped up during this restoration but due to their rarity the sellers have asked way too much $. A couple of sets were found for very little $ but those that found them are not letting go. So any help would be much appreciated in locating these.

and for anyone interested in a wide body kit or even a standard body AMG kit, I've contacted a friend who is sending a container to Finland departing the third week in November. I'll be able to offer substantially discounted shipping compared to traditional commercial rates. I'll put you in contact with him to then arrange for local (within Finland) courier service or pickup. He's Finnish and based in Hämälina.
I have two standard body kits already made and are available immediately at $800 usd + shipping + Suomen tulli.
The wide body kits are built to order and typically takes 4-6 weeks to build. So if you're seriously interested you need to place an order asap, place deposit of 50% and I'll ask that they rush order the kit to make this container departure. 12 pc kit pictured above. Balance due when the kit is completed. Total $3000usd + shipping + Suomen tulli.
You can email/Paypal me at 48hp@earthlink.net. Kiitos!

Those headers, are they stainless steel?
I suggest you put some BBS E50 (more authentic for '83) or standard BBS RS with same specs untill you find those pentas. Atleast you get them cheaper... and now when i said that, someone posts a fine example of those pentas cheap on ebay. I tend to manage say these things of wheels and within a week someone posts an add of cheap ones

Those wheels are really, really hard to find. There aren't many 10 inch pentas manufactured for street use (i.e. standard boltpattern), i bet the amount is less than 2000 pieces total from 60's to 80's. Niners with ET11 or 14 were popular but quite rare with ET0 and last, eights are easy to find in ET11 and 24. Propably you have noticed that too allready48hp kirjoitti:So any help would be much appreciated in locating these.

The headers are ceramic coated steel. Beautiful.
I know of two sets for sale and two other sets that could be persuaded to let go of them. Unfortunately they all want way too much money. I can build a set of BBS as you've suggested for less.
I do have backup. So no sweat off my back if an affordable set do not turn up.
Polished and shiny. Assembly has begun!

Coming down the home stretch on the interior. Recaro's have been freshly reupholstered, headliner recovered in leather and I replaced the dash with a nice minty example. Just waiting on the rear seats and parcel shelf.
