I havea quick transmission question regarding the differences between the trannys of the 1986/87 3.0L gasoline engine and the 3.0L diesel engine. Did this two cars use the same transmission?

Manual or automatic?
300 turbo diesel and 300 gasoline has both 722.3 automatic transmission. But there is a small difference in valvebody. Gasolines shifting points are at higher rpm.
Naturally aspirated 300 diesel has 722.4 automatic transmission which is not as tough as 722.3.

... and if you need numbers...
300DT/TDT is with 322.357 aut.transmission
and
300T/TE is with 322.358 aut.transmission

ok, check that, my question should have been do they have the same bolt pattern on the transmission? between the 1987 300D turbos and the 1987 300E gas

Yes.

ok then. i have asked before if the transmission/bellhosing and such from a 300E manual from 1986 would work on a 1987 300D turbo, and i got no for a response. will this bolt up or no? if no, why?

[edit: I'm talking about automatic transmissons, i think this question was manual transmissions instead, sorry]
I have asked this same kind of question concerned W683 (Vito) if one is able to use transmission of gasoline instead of diesel, and response was no, newer

I don't know exactly why but one issue in my mind, consider the rpm range of diesel engine (up to 4800 rpm) and gasoline (up to 6000+++ rpm). There is also major difference of the behaviour of the engines, diesel have quite huge torque compared to gasoline.
I think Jarko S. know exactly what are the main differences and if the gasoline transmission could be a base for building ST-transmission (SuperTurbo).

i understand that the automatic transmissions wouldnt be interchangeable, but I am more concerned about a manual swap. what are the gear ratios for the 5spd manual from the 300E

ok so at this point, my question is, can I use the transmission from a 190E 2.3-16V? Will this bolt up to the '87 300D engine? if not, will this tranmission bolt up to the 1986 300E manual tranny bellhousing? I know this is a tranmission for a 4 cly that would live in the high RPM range, but couldnt changing the rear gear ratio to a lower number fix this?

The 722.3 auto has 1:1 top gear ratio, as does the getrag manual tranny in the 16V. The 300e 5speeds were probably all overdrive in fifth.
I can't give you the gear ratios in the 300E, but the 16V had 4.08/2.52/1.77/1.26/1.00
USA market 16V had a 3.27 rear, but there were other options in europe. The 16v that averaged 154 mph for 30,000 miles obviously had a taller diff than 3.27.
USA market 1987 300d had a 2.65 final drive.
I believe, but am not sure, that you can interchange flywheels and transmissions on 601/602/603 diesels with 2.3 4 cyl and 2.6&3.0 six cylinders. Having the correct flywheel for your engine would probably be a good idea, but I think the others will bolt on. Hopefully somebody who has done the conversion will confirm this.
I hope to get a 602 flywheel and put my turbo 602 in my 16v chassis with the 16v 5sp.

thanks. How soon are you looking to do this? Be sure to let me know how the bolting up goes....what is the final ratio of the tranmission in the car now? If it is 1:1 then that is fine because it wouldnt be any different in the 16V tranny for cruising. I hear that the E500 differential is a much better/stronger unit that also has limited slip. what is the rear axle ratio on that one?
thanks again
steve

I won't be able to do much with the 190D 5sp project until late April.
I'll be using the 2.65 diff from the 190d with the 1:1 5sp from the 2.3-16v. I don't know yet if the LSD guts from the 16v can be put in the 2.65 diff. I do know the 16v diff has a 124 part number, but I haven't been under the 190d.
Dave M (gsxr on mercedesshop forums) did a pdf of the info he compiled when looking into diff swaps for his 124 300d and 500e.
His 500e has a 2.82 in it.

a flywheel from a m102 4 cyl or a m103 6 cyl. fits the om603, i'm using a flywheel amd clutch from a m102 2.0 om my 603.
