OM603 pump with 6mm or 7mm elements - what is max HP?

Viesti Kirjoittaja AMG Dave »

Hello,

From reading other posts on this forum, it seems that the limit of the stock OM603.960 pump, with 5.5mm elements, is approximately 180hp. I was able to source 6mm pump elements from a 606.962 pump. My questions are...

1) What is the max power the 603 pump can produce, with 6mm elements installed, and no other changes? I was estimating 200-220hp or so. Has anyone done this?

2) If I bought a set of 7mm elements from Myna Diesel, and had them installed in a 603 pump by a Bosch shop here in the USA... how much power would that make, without any other changes (stock IP cam, stock governor, etc etc)? Maybe 300hp?

I'm trying to increase the power on my 1987 300D (603.960) with the stock turbocharger and stock exhaust manifold, for now. Later I plan to upgrade the turbo and maybe the manifold. I know Myna makes many other changes to their uber-pumps that increase the power output to 450hp or more, but I'm only looking to make 275-300hp, not 400-500.

Any information would be greatly appreciated - thank you!

I know that om 603 has great potential, with correct adjusted original pump and everything else stock you are getting about 180-200hp. With intercooler mybe a bit more.
With stock turbo you wont get much joy with bigger elements, cause exhaust gas temperatures rises and also turbo gets small-->boost rises and the temperature load to the cylinderhead and pistons rises also dramatically. What i have read about the power increases with bigger elements, they all have also installed a bigger turbo (Garret GT 35-40) and a intercooler. Intercooler is a must if you are planning some real 280-300hp, it is a cheap insurance also for the mildly tuned engine.

Some sources say 6mm can produce up to 280hp, so 220hp is very reasonable target. Stock turbo will anyway be in its limits with that much power, so I would change that too to save the engine.

I believe it is possible to get over 300hp by just changing 7mm elements to pump. I don´t know exactly what else mynä does to its pumps.

Btw. interesting looking that US model exhaust manifold. :D

Hi everyone!

I took my 1987 300D to the dyno yesterday. A video is at this link, and you can see the dyno graphs at the end:
http://www.w124performance.com/movies/M ... o/87_300D/

It put out approx 140hp at the wheels, with 190lb-ft of torque. Assuming a conservative 18% powertrain loss, that would be 170hp and 230lb-ft at the crank. Using a more generous 20% loss estimate translates into roughly 175hp and 235lb-ft at the crank.

I also had the car weighed on a digital scale. Correcting for fuel load, it was 3600lbs with a full tank of fuel - well above the MB claimed curb weight of 3375 (for the USA-spec 1987 model). Even adjusting for the heavier brakes, tires, sway bars, etc that I have installed, that's still a big difference. I'm starting to think MB published "dry" weights, without fuel in the tank. That would almost account for the discrepancy.

Photos of the dyno session are here:

I'll go back to the dyno after I get the hybrid pump with 6mm elements installed. I'm hoping for 180hp (or more) at the rear wheels, with the 6mm elements. I'm waiting for the Bosch shop to start working on that... could be several weeks though.

I agree with Haisuli, the stock turbo & manifold will limit power with the 6mm elements, EGT's will probably be quite high, and manifold backpressure also too high. But, I'll see what happens. I'm trying to find a turbocharger that is slightly larger than the stock KKK-K24 that I have now (or the Garrett TB-03).
